We’re looking for someone who knows the full names and dates of birth of Prince William and Kate Middleton’s kids. We’re also looking for someone who can recite Harry and Meghan’s Oprah interview off by heart and someone who lives for every one of those “a look inside the palace” type articles. New Idea Royals is on the hunt for a royal-obsessed and highly experienced editor and magazine expert to take charge of this unique and informative monthly product three days per week. This is an incredibly rare opportunity to lead a small but dynamic team and support the growth of this exciting extension of the New Idea brand.

Reporting to the Celebrity Editorial Director and working in conjunction with the editor of New Idea weekly magazine, you’ll not only live and breathe all things royal, both British and royals around the world, but you’ll understand the uniquely Aussie readership and the important place the royal family hold in the lives of New Idea readers.

This is a diverse and varied role for someone who can work in a fast-paced and ever-changing environment. You will know a good cover from a great one, be on the pulse when it comes to news and trends and have a clear vision for the future of this magazine. We’re looking for the best of the best when it comes to someone who can work alongside the Editorial Director to drive the strategic direction and circulation of this brand.

  • Drive the vision and strategic direction of the magazine, using current trends, reader insights and sales results to ensure content always speaks to the unique audience and a clear tone is maintained from month to month
  • Develop and maintain an ongoing cover strategy that promotes variety, ensures regular engagement from readers, and drives circulation and brand awareness while also providing a clear differentiation between the weekly and monthly products.
  • Maintain an effective team of in-house staff and freelance contributors to create the best possible product and lead that team to achieve optimum results both collaboratively and individually.
  • Be responsible for a clear and effective workflow that ensures best practice publication of the product each month.
  • Work closely with the art director to design covers that speak to the high-quality nature of the product.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with relevant royal contacts, publishing houses and publicists to ensure a wide variety of engaging content.

Skills and experience

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience on a royal magazine, website or related industry, with experience in a management role preferable
  • Strong leadership skills with a desire to help others around you grow
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with a particular focus on copy editing
  • Experience putting a cover together from conceptualisation to design and print
  • Ability to deal with a fast paced, changing environment
  • Professional, mature and decisive in approach
  • Experience with editorial software applications
  • A list of royal contacts is desirable
